Hallo again from Liechtenstein! Today I'm going to tell you about the holidays we celebrate and the festivals we attend. First I should mention that we celebrate a lot of the holidays that the countries around us celebrate (we are landlocked by Switzerland and Austria, remember). We celebrate many holidays; most which are religous. We have:
- New Year's Day (the 1st of January) - Like most everyone else, we celebrate the new year!
- Epiphany (the 6th of January) - Epiphany is a religous holiday. This is when we celebrate the coming of the Magi to visit the infant Jesus.
- Candlemas (the 2nd of February) - Candlemas is a Christian festival held on February 2 to commemorate the purification of the Virgin Mary and the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. Candles are blessed at this festival.
- Feast of St. Joseph (the 19th of March) - the principal feast day of Saint Joseph, spouse of the Virgin Mary.
- Easter Monday (the 24th of March) - Another religous holiday where we celebrate the ressurection of our Messiah.
- Labour Day (the 1st of May) - As like the countries around us, we take this day off to honor the working people.
- Ascension (the 1st of May) - Ascension is when we celebrate the ascent of Christ into heaven on the 40th day after the ressurection.
- Whit Monday (the 12th of May) - Whit Monday or Pentecost Monday (also known as Monday of the Holy Spirit) is the holiday celebrated the day after Pentecost, a movable feast in the Christian calendar.
- Corpus Christi (the 22nd of May) - This is a feast of the Western Christian Church commemorating the institution of the Eucharist, observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday.
- Assumption (the 15th of August) - Also known as the Assumption of Mary, we celebrate the Virgin Mary's being taken up into heaven when her earthly life ended.
- Nativity of Our Lady (the 8th of September) - Here we celebrate the birth of the Virgin Mary.
- All Saints' Day (the 1st of November) - All Saints' Day is a festival on which the church remembers and honors all the Christian faithful, both known and unknown.
- Immaculate Conception (the 8th of December) - The Immaculate Conception refers to the condition that the Blessed Virgin Mary was free from Original Sin from the very moment of her conception in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne.
- Christmas Day (the 25th of December) - Like all other Christians, on this holiday we celebrate the birth of Christ.
- St. Stephen's Day (the 26th of December) - The day after Christmas, we celebrate Saint Stephen's Day. Here we celebrate the first Christian martyr, who was stoned to death shortly after the Crucifixion.
That is just a few of the major holidays we celebrate, and like I said, most are very religious holidays that go in accordance with the Roman Catholic church.
Here we also have quite a few festivals, most of which have to do with music.
Talk to you soon!
-Sara
